Beijing Lotus Hostel
Our hostel is located in one of Peking’s exquisite traditional neighborhoods known as hutongs. As Beijing grows and modernizes many hutongs are being destroyed. However, recently the government has designated certain hutongs to be protected and preserved as historical and cultural spaces. Our hostel is situated within one of these protected areas. Our particular neighborhood was formed in the Yuan Dynasty (1279-1368) and has retained its original scale and structure through the Ming and Qing dynasties and up to the present.
Hello,
I want to travel by train in july by train from Xiamen to Kunming. I have a couple of questions about this trip:
- what are the prices for a single trip?
- do we have to make a reservation before?
- is it possible to sleep at the train when it is night?
- are there other things we have to keep in mind?

THE only direct land link between India and China -- a Himalayan pass mapped by a British expedition a century ago -- is to be reopened this month for the first time in 44 years.
The 14,400ft Nathula Pass -- used by Colonel Francis Younghusband to lead a British invasion force to Tibet in 1904 -- has been closed since the Sino-Indian border war in 1962. Its reopening marks a belated thaw between the two old enemies who recently became business rivals.
For the past 44 years the only traffic across the pass has been a weekly mail run. Letters written by Tibetan herders on both sides are exchanged by postmen who meet at the top of the pass.
A student in Wuhan, capital of China's central province of Hubei, used earphones so small that they slipped into his aural canal and perforated his eardrum, the China Daily newspaper said.
Another student's earphones required an operation for their removal, the paper said, while an electronic device connected to headphones and strapped to a third student's body exploded, leaving a bleeding hole in his abdomen.
Chinese cities have been ordered to put back their cycle lanes in the hope of restoring the nation's image as the land of the bicycle.
The government is also considering following London's lead and introducing congestion charges to cut traffic.
"Some Chinese cities are cutting back on bicycle lanes to make more room for cars, just as some western cities are beginning to build more of them," the unusually environment-conscious vice-minister of construction, Qiu Baoxing, told a planning conference yesterday. He said China should remain what he called the kingdom of bicycles.

- Often, when a thing is just begun, it is impossible to know how it will end, much less whether society will acknowledge it. If you want success you must make every possible effort, you must keep a cool head and resist anxiety. If you work calmly and steadfastly, you will attain happiness. But if you are constantly focused on the fruits of success, the loneliness will be unbearable; you’ll be unable to stay the course and will end up empty-handed. During these times we should remember that ________.

The San Xing Dui Museum ( www.iHotPot.com ) is a must-do day-trip when coming to Chengdu. Located about 35-40km down the Chengmian Expressway which exits Chengdu in the Northeast quadrant of the city, it will take you about 30 minutes to get there by private car, or 60 minutes using bus routes. San Xing Dui is located about 7km from Guanghan, which is also home to the Civil Aviation Flight University of China, where they train most of China's pilots, air traffic controllers and flight attendants. The Duck River runs through Guanghan and you will discover a 2 km stretch of it lined with the usual teahouse and ma-jiang set-up. Guanghan has the best Sichuan Pork ( www.iHotPot.com ) dish that I have found in over 6 years of Sichuan living. The pork strips are meatier and thicker than most others. There is a small farmer's restaurant located just past the Flight University main gate (about a half kilometre) which outsiders do not know about, but which has simply incredible local food. Ask a student on the sidewalk and they can point you in the right direction. Most students there can speak English, so no troubles!
