First settled in 1681 by the Fifth Dalai Lama, this breathtaking monastery complex -- the biggest in Yunnan -- is definitely a must-see for visitors to Xianggelila. It's located 4 kilometers north of town, and can be reached via a 15 minute ride on the #3 public bus (1 yuan).
Admission: Y10

You can spend just 10 minutes going through the main hall, or you can literally spend hours wandering around the many monks' houses scattered over the hill. Find a monk that is interested in talking with you -- it's often quite a pleasant experience.
