N Cafe3 stars

IKEA look, menu with many of the options not actually available, but good food.  After trying to order two other things, ended up getting something like a meatball bruschetta (they didn't have the right bread) for 28 RMB.

Salvador's Coffee House4 stars

Burrito tortillas and bagels don't approach the real thing, but it's a stylish and lively place with good food. The "home style fries" are much more like french fries than fried potatos. Extra credit for whoever added the green tea ice cream/ginger ale float to the menu. It's expensive, but surprisingly not awful.

The Compass: Lodge, Cafe, Consultancy - Just don't go there if there are camera crews around4 stars

With its location near the old town square and its "ooh look at me, white people cooking food!" plate glass windows, the Compass seems to be having no problems drawing foreign tourists.

The place serves up reasonable grill food (which is great grill food by Shangri-La standards).

20 yuan and up for breakfast, 30 yuan and up for lunch and dinner. Open 0830-2230.

Out back, there are also four small furnished rooms for rent, but at the time of writing, there seemed to be no takers.

Arro Khampa! - Good food, inconsistent service4 stars

The food is delicious -- about as good as a high quality Indian restaurant in a ethnically diverse non-Indian city. Unfortunately, the service can sometimes be excruciatingly slow, especially if the restaurant has more than one or two other tables of diners.

Today, the "dough making guy" was apparently not at work, so chapatis, samosas, and momos were all unavailable.  That's a pretty common occurrance -- take the menu as advisory only.

If the food were any more average, I'd stop visiting due to the higher than average prices, but I'm often happy enough with the food that I get, even if it wasn't what I wanted, that Arro Khampa rates the periodic visit.

Mei Mei Cafe - Good food, bad service3 stars

The sandwiches and burgers here were surprisingly good, but the staff working there were not helpful when it came to answering questions about booking a boat to Thailand.  In fact, the waitress that I first asked said that they no longer provided that service.  However, Orchid (the owner?) and the other manager were both quite helpful.

Kunming - Charming in its own way4 stars

It's very easy to get around in the city center of Kunming, due to its compact layout. There are a few random alleys that you can still walk through and see older housing conditions. And the city is clean and still slightly less polluted than other Chinese cities. Some travellers find this place boring, and it is, if you're doing the "checkmark" style of staying a day or two in each place. However, if you have the time to squat for a while, there's a pleasant atmosphere to be found.

I've learned some chinese from this guy, and he serves large portions of food at reasonable prices. Try the "Er Si"

Hazel Bar - A wee bit pricy3 stars

Hazel and Ma are the kindest people. The food is decent, but a bit pricy.

Naxi Manna Snack - Expensive rice.3 stars

I didn't try their "hot pot" specialty because some other customers were eating it and it didn't look over-the-top appealing. We tried 2 vegetable dishes: a stir fried mushroom dish and a stir fried vegetable dish. Both were pretty good but not spectacular. My friend got a plate of fried "er quai" to go. Each dish was 5 yuan. Together with our two bowls of rice (5 yuan total) we had a decent meal for 15 yuan (plus the er quai take away for the dog)
