Hami has historically been known by the names "Kunmo" and "Yiwulu". Located 595 kilometers from Urumqi, Hami has the distinction of having the most sunshine per year in Xinjiang at 3234 hours per year. It's also a dry place, receiving 34 millimeters of rain per year.
There's a night market outside the bus station and a day market in town near the peoples park. There are also a few hotels near the bus station.
