Otherwise, of course, pets are kept as company especially for children or old people left at home alone for extended periods.
The tibetans in this area have dogs to scare people away from the house and cats to scare mice away from the house. There's a superstition that having a cat sleep in your bed means you'll get eaten by a tiger whenever you next go up a mountain or something like that. But I might not have translated that right.
My interpretation would be to fulfill the emptiness hidden among people who lives in city (especially!). While having interesting facts saying people who rear dogs and cats aree totally different individual with different characteristics.

Wait are you saying that it is unusual for people to have pets in china? Why is that? In the U.S. almost everyone has a pet.
