Tangshan is located 135km from Beijing in Hebei province.
It was near the epicenter of an 8.2 magnitude earthquake at 3:52 a.m. on July 28, 1976 which officially killed 242,419 people and severely injured 164,581 more. Some sources estimate that the death toll may have been as high as three times the recorded figure.
Most of the buildings in the city were completely destroyed or severely damaged. However, reconstruction started immediately and the city is, with the exception of one or two buildings preserved since that time, completely rebuilt.
