On the border with the Tibet Autonomous Region is the Meili mountain range. The highest and most often photographed peak in the range is Mount Kawa Karpo which every year of the sheep is the destination of masses of Tibetan pilgrims, who circumambulate the mountain over a little more than a week carrying little more than the tools to make yak butter tea. Climbers have attempted to ascend Kawa Karpo, but none have yet survived. Tourist pilgrims can find information on both the inner circuit around the mountain, which takes roughly 4 days, and the outer circuit, which takes roughly 10 days, in many of the hotels in Deqin.
