Hard Seat - Soft Seat?

  Joined: 2005-11-09 Points: 14 | Hi all, Could someone kindly explain to me if a hard seat is just a wooden single seat or a wooden bench and where do you put your backpacks when travelling by train - can they be put under your seat or are they stored somewhere else? Any other good info about the hard seats / soft seats? Thank you for your time :-) |

I have actually never travelled "seat" on chinese trains, either hard or soft. But google images (which has gotten a lot better over the years) has some good results both for hard seat and soft seat, which give a pretty good overview of what the seats themselves are like, but probably don't give you an idea of how crowded the cars (in hard seat) might be.

A hard seat is a wooden two-person bench seat. There are overhead racks for bags. I travelled one time from Dali to Kunming. It took about 7 hours. About 5 - 6 hours is sufficient in a hard seat.
If travelling over night, the hard sleeper is a good option.

Having said that a soft seat is more comfortable.
