I read somewhere that it is hard for backpackers to bus into Tibet, so advise on this would also be appreciated And finally, do you have to get the permit to enter Tibet from a travel agent who organises a trip for you in tibet, or is it possible to do Tibet without an organised tour? If so, how do you get the permit? Thank you all so much for your time |

there's some info in this thread.
The options for getting to Tibet from China that allow you to get a permit are:
* Bus from Qinghai (Golmud or Xining)
* Flight from Chengdu (check out Sim's Cozy Guesthouse)
* Flight from Xianggelila (aka Zhongdian)
* Jeep from Xianggelila
The permit (which you only get a physical copy of if you are going by land) should be included in the price of your transportation from whatever travel agent you use.
Permits aren't available if you want to:
* Cycle into Tibet
* Overland from Xinjiang province
* Bus from Xianggelila
People get into Tibet without permits by having a driver that will help them avoid checkpoints by hiding you under blankets or whatnot. I understand you also can't check into a hotel for yourself if you don't have a permit, so you need a way to deal with that as well.

The 318 highway from Chengdu should get you to Lhasa without trouble. I did it this summer, and with the exception of some muddy stretches before Ba Yi in Tibet, the road was okay. Rockslides may have made things rougher with the rainy season, but that road supplies the military in Southern Tibet, so I couldn't imagine it being closed. The checkpoint on the border to get into Tibet was nothing major, just a few guys waving cars through. If you are on a motorcycle you can avoid all this because there is always enough space for a motorcycle to get around the guardrails on this road.

I didn't buy any sort of permit and had no trouble staying at Tibetan owned hotels along the road to Lhasa.

I am an American. I teach high school in Xian. I wanna buy a motorcycle and travel from Xian to Lhasa, of course see Mt. Everest. I also wanna go the long way, via the Silk Road, see Dunhuang, Korla, Kashi. Am I stupid?
How can I get a Chinese companion to go with me, mostly for communication. Or is it even NECESSARY to speak Chinese?
What brand Chinese motorcycle is best? How many cc? Should I travel with a small trailer, you know, the two wheel outfits that are a couple feet square, maybe 18 inches high.
I can travel from July 1st to September 1st. Is this good travel weather?
Will I die in the altitude at Mt. Everest? Can I go south from Everest into Katmandu? How high is THAT pass? I have my American Passport, and my Chinese visa (for one year cuz I teach). Can I get into Nepal easily? Like, just show my passport? Can I get back into China?
I have three quarters of a million questions.
Paul
ps: Money, yeah, must I carry a lotta cash? Can I get my VISA debit card to work along the way? Carry money orders?
Oh yeah. Oh yeah. Oh yeah: Could I take a train from Xian, hang my motorbike on the train, or place it inside somewhere in a baggage car or someplace, then, presto, ride it in Tibet when I wanna?
