A researcher from CMU demonstrated a project which allows you to mouth words in one language and have them translated into another language.
Quote:

Mr. Jou, a graduate student in language technologies at Carnegie Mellon University, was simply mouthing words in his native Mandarin Chinese. But 11 electrodes attached to his face and neck detected his muscle movements, enabling a computer program to figure out what he was trying to say and then translate his Mandarin into English.

The result boomed out of a loudspeaker a few seconds later:

"Let me introduce our new prototype," a synthesized voice announced. "You can speak in Mandarin and it translates into English or Spanish."

Surprised

Interesting thread, wtanaka.

I try speaking some of the basic sounds in
Chinese, & I need to say something completely
different to allow for my own pronunciation &
accent.

At the moment I can NOT do the Chinese "Z"
(as in "zi" - orange) OR "C" (as in cao - grass).

The "zh" is okay if I make the short vowel sound
for "j"

Embarassed

Star Trek technology?

Quote:

Universal Language Translator:

As this is used on the Star Trek shows, it's just an automagical device to enable characters to get through the stories. It would be too tedious and repetitious in a one-hour show for the characters to overcome real language barriers in a realistic manner in every show. The way the Enterprise crew can encounter an alien spacecraft, "hail them on standard frequencies," and establish instant telecommunications on their viewscreens is a preposterous shortcut to keep the plot from faltering. We can certainly dismiss the possibility of such an invention ever being built.
