Train Prices

 Joined: 2005-10-20 Points: 1 | Can anyone give an idea of what the trains cost. I'm looking to start from Beijing then goto Xi'an then goto Shanghai, then return to Beijing. I didn't see any prices listed in the train schedule. In Europe, its cheaper to fly than to take the train because of competition. Thanks in advance. |

I believe it's cheaper to take the train in China from the research I've done for my upcoming trip. Although air travel won't be much more expensive if you can get a good deal.

I'm going to offer the same advice that I always offer, and that's to do BJ-SH-XA-BJ instead of BJ-XA-SH-BJ, for the reason that it's tough to get decent train tickets from XA to SH considering the fact that it's a provincial capital. Out of all the various trains (I think there're
doing this route, you can buy a sleeper ticket for only 1 of those.
BJ-XA Z train soft sleeper: 417/400 RMB (lower/upper)
BJ-SH Z train soft sleeper: 499/478 RMB (lower/upper)
SH-XA T train hard sleeper: 333/323/312 RMB (lower/middle/upper)

caspar, I'd offer to help you get the tickets in advance, but unfortunately I think you'll be coming at a time when I'm not in China.
You're not coming at a busy local travel period, so if you buy your onward ticket when you arrive at each destination, that should be fine. BTW, you said "following trip"... where?
