Warren Rodwell has just finished proofreading a 150,000 word (over 400 pages) book about Chengdu and Sichuan Province in south-west China. It is due to be published as soon as reasonably possible.
To provide interested readers of The Treehouse some idea of the book's content, parts of the preface have been reproduced below.
Nothing beats local knowledge & the literature you are about to peruse, has been translated from Chinese to English, in a sincere attempt to present an accurate account of significant activities & useful information, previously not readily known to foreigners with their sights set on this charming locality and its fascinating surrounds.
Ideally, translation should be more than simply changing the words of one language into another. It is understood and appreciated that people from different cultures process & disseminate data differently. Low-context cultures (e.g. North America, the British Isles, Australia, & the Scandinavian countries) are much more precise in their commun- ication. High-context cultures (such as China) are the exact opposite.
All due care has been taken to make this book as readable & fluent as possible in English .....
Consider this book your local friend in Sichuan, as it takes you through topics such as – geography, climate, ecological environment, history, people, culture and customs. The section on facts for the visitor is a valuable resource in itself. As too, are recommended touring routes. You can acquire with ease, some common wisdom of Chengdu urbanites.
[Sichuan is located at about the centre of the above map]
Vital and practical directions are given with respect to which local buses or other transport to catch, as well as how much the fares & accommodation will set you back. Legends & folk tales are recounted in a quaint & colourful way. This hopefully instils an affectionate & closer affinity with this time- honoured land & its various occupants.
Whether your specific interest is in martial arts,Chinese traditional medicine, religion, investment, cultural studies, tourism, education, work,or entertainment; this publication is a reliable compendium of usefulness, which can be absorbed either ferociously or at leisure. You may care to carry it with you on exotic adventures, display it on a coffee table or bookshelf, exhibit it as an office showpiece, or otherwise present this limited edition as a gift to those you hold in high esteem.

The book has now been published & is retailing
for Y98 RMB ($US12.25). I will try to upload a
picture of it soon.
For initial distribution purposes, it is simplest at
this stage, only to supply copies of the book to
people in Chengdu.
