Xinjiang, or “New frontier” is truly a land of superlatives. It can at the same time claim to be China’s hottest, coldest, driest, lowest, and largest region. For centuries a vital trade link between the Orient and the West, Xinjiang offers a fascinating mix of cultures and diverse natural environments unique in China.
It is important to note that Xinjiang uses 2 different time zones. Airlines, hotels, banks, and Han residents use the official, or Beijing time. Uyghur run businesses and Uyghur people in general often uses Xinjiang time, which is 2 hours behind. If in doubt, check.
Whatever you are after, Xinjiang offers a plethora of opportunities for the adventurous traveller or culture vulture, and is also witnessing somewhat of resurgence as a trade link between Inner China and Central Asia.
