CHENGDU, China, Dec. 10 (UPI) -- Doctors in China said they found and removed a rusty needle stuck in a Chinese girl's head for 11 years.

The needle apparently had been inserted by relatives to try to kill the girl when she was an infant, a common practice in a culture that values males, and in a country with a "one couple, one child" family policy, The Times of London reported Thursday,

The surgeons who removed the needle said they think it caused the girl's mental disabilities and its removal will not improve her mentally. The child has the mental capabilities of a 3-year-old, The Times said.

Infanticide and abortions, due to the rule of only one child per couple, has created an imbalance in China, with 120 boys for every 100 girls. A normal balance would be 108 boys to every 100 girls, the Times reported.
