Can anyone recomend a good hotel that is reasonably priced and close to the city center? Can you book hotels and train tickets with a single company to gain discount?

Although you will probably get better rates by just showing up and looking for a place after you arrive, if you really want to book a hostel ahead of time, you could try hostelworld.

The type of accomodation depends on the price.
I guess I would like to be paying around £30 for a double room for a night. Around $60. I guess I can get a 3* hotel for that. If I can make this a little cheaper I will.
In reponse to another question I guess I am now traveling via Shanghai so I will be looking for hotels in Bejing, Shanghai and Hong Kong.

Since listing this I have now booked accomodation in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong. I found out form the forum that it was more difficult than I though to get from Xian to Hong Kong so needed to make a change.
