![]() Joined: 2005-12-31 Points: 14 | I was hoping for some suggestions about the route/plan for travelling in Yunnan. Of course, I would like to cover all the major spots. Need some advice about how many days to spend on each place and also the best transportation to take. I would prefer train to bus as I get car sick sometimes. Thanks! |

The first destination is usually the capital city, Kunming. From where & how do you plan to arrive in Yunnan ?

I plan to go there via Bangkok/HK? Do you know which one has got a cheaper flight?

I'm flying round trip from Kunming to Chiang Mai leaving today, and I paid 1906 yuan for the round trip (bought on 2 days notice). One way was somewhere around 1200.
You'll be able to get quotes for the Hong Kong via email by just searching for travel agents in Hong Kong.

What airline is that? How's the weather there in Mar/Apr?

The price is usually about Y2000 return between Bangkok - Kunming - Bangkok with China Eastern Airlines. Flying time is 1 hour 50 minutes.
Hong Kong tends to be more expensive. Chinese people usually catch the ferry to Shenzhen to get cheaper domestic flights with the China mainland.
The Bangkok (or Chiang Mai) - Kunming option is simplest.
In March / April, the weather is very pleasant in "the City of Eternal Spring" (Kunming).

Thai Airways in my case. The Chiang Mai flights (mine continued on to Bangkok) go on Thursday and Sunday. Perhaps there are more flights directly between Bangkok and Kunming.

So it's like spring all the time in Kunming. How about the other places or mountains? Is it a rainy season?

Thanks a lot guys!! But I really need to know the weather prediction in Mar/Apr coz one of us is backing out saying that it's rainy season. Please let me know the forecast based on your experience. Thanks again.

you could take a look at this:

it's probably about as accurate as any other means to try and predict the weather. :)

I really appreciate your help but it's kind of jargon for me. I just want to know whether it rains a lot or not? Is it heavy or just drizzling? If it rains, would it be like the whole day or only for a few hours? So sorry, I know it's quite a stupid question.

I've only lived in Xianggelila (Zhongdian) long enough to give you a gut feel impression there. Other cities are probably a bit different. In Xianggelila rain/snow tends to be hard, sporadic, and sudden. It'll rain for about half the day at the very most. That's enough to make some people miserable, but it's nothing compared to L.A. in the winter. Sometimes it rains pretty hard, perhaps a 7 out of a scale of 1-10 that I've seen. Then it might stop for 2 days. Or 0 days. Or 5 days.

The heaviest rain throughout Yunnan is usually during the summer months of June, July & August ...
