Informations on Shangri-la

Submitted by Yalia (2) on Sat, 2006-04-15 04:10.

Hi there,

We're travelling in a group of 4 and will be going to Shangri-la from Kunming on the 16th May by flight. We need some informations which are as follows:

1) will it be possible to hire a car with a driver to take us around in Shangri-la? Can you recommend us an agent.

2) from Shangri-la, we will be going to Lijiang and would like to know if there is a possibility to hire a minivan or a car to bring us there. Or should we take a bus. Where can we book the bus tickets.

3) what is the temperature in Shangri-la around mid-May.

Thanking you in advance for your assistance and looking forward to hear from you.

Trains from Guangzhou to Chengdu

Submitted by Leibo (1) on Mon, 2006-04-10 22:07.

I am hoping to take a train from Guangzhou to Chengdu in late May but I don't seem to be able to find a way to buy a ticket in advance. Does anyone know if this can be done. If not, would I be able to buy a hard sleeper ticket from Guangzhou to Chengdu on the same day I arrive from Hong Kong or should I plan more time to get the ticket once in Guangzhou? Thanks for your help.

Stuck with a hard seat ticket?

Submitted by wtanaka (648) on Fri, 2006-02-24 12:37.

I read a story about someone "stuck" with a hard seat ticket on a long train ride:

That day, a "hard seat" train ticket was my only option to leave from Wu Han, the transportation hub in the middle of China to Guizhou, a capital city in the south west mountain region some 15 hours away. All other classes, soft sleeper, hard sleeper, and soft seat--in decreasing order of comfort--were sold out.

While such a journey can make for an "experience" or a source for complaining, depending on your disposition, there actually is a way out of it -- from what I hear, more times than not.

Budget Airline Tiger Airlines (based in Singapore) has gotten permission to service 3 southern cities in China.  The article doesn't mention which cities these are going to be.

Advice needed re. itinerary

Submitted by Crofty (2) on Sat, 2006-02-18 09:15.

Have ten days holiday coming up soon. Am based in HK and plan to catch the train from HK to Guangzhou and then on to Kunming. After that not sure. Would like to go Lijiang, Tiger Leaping Gorge, Dali, Shangri-la and then ???? Will be heading back to HK by train also. Want to travel as much as possible by soft sleeper class. Can anyone suggest what would be the best route and what the train tickets cost approximately. Also, do the trains keep pretty much to schedule or do they usually run late. Sorry to sound so naive but hey, we all have to start some time Smile

Thanks for any advice.

Please, does anyone know how much a bed will cost me in Lhasa??

I can't find any info on the net about this.

Also, I am wondering how much a railway trip from Lhasa to Xi'ang will cost? What is the cheapest way to travel thorugh China?

(I will be visiting Lhasa, Xi'an, Shanghai and last but not least Beijing)

IF ANYONE GOT A GOOD LINK TO SOMETHING THAT MIGHT HELP ME WITH THIS, PLEASE POST IT!
