"Water town" in north eastern Zhejiang province opened to visitors in 2001. Buildings in the town have been preserved and maintained, perhaps resulting in the most authentic "Water Town" experience.
It's about 90 minutes drive from Shanghai. There is a tour bus that runs daily from Shanghai Tourists Center (3200 Xietu Lu, near Shanghai Stadium, tel +86 21 6626 5555). The bus leaves somewhere more or less around 8 am and returns somewhere around 6 pm.
It's also possible to take a train or bus to Jiaxing and then a minibus to Wuzhen.
