If you're travelling into China from Laos, or into Laos from China, you'll likely end up passing through this city, and possibly staying overnight.

You can cross from Laos to China by taking a Songthaew (pickup truck) from Udomxai to the border town of Boten, walk across the border to the Chinese border town of Mohan (both of which are just names of the outposts) and then taking a mianbao che (a sub-minivan) to Mengla.

It's apparently now possible to get a Lao visa on the border upon arrival, if you are going from China to Laos. See the following link for more information:
