Just moved to Kunming

Verfasst von jackh (2) am Sa, 2005-12-10 06:20.

Hello ,

I have just moved here from Seattle USA.  I came to visit Kunming last Spet and fell in love with this place so I sold my house, quit my job, and now I am retired and living in Kunming.

I would like to meet some expats living here or at least find out where the best place I can go where expats hang out. ANy feedback would be appreciated.

6 months straight in an Internet Cafe

Verfasst von wtanaka (648) am Fr, 2005-12-09 09:14.

This reminds me of the internet cafe user that died after not sleeping for 3 days.

A college dropout in Nanjing has spent the last 6 months in a Internet cafe sleeping, eating and playing World of Warcraft. The woman who delivers food to him no longer wants to get near him because of the smell.

Jellyfish Terror

Verfasst von wtanaka (648) am Do, 2005-12-08 08:37.

Jellyfish 6ft wide and 450lb (200kg) are disrupting fishing in the sea of Japan.

In the meantime locals are making the best of it — rather than just complaining about jellyfish they are eating them.

Jellyfish are an unusual ingredient of Japanese cuisine but are much more prized in China. Coastal communities are doing their best to promote jellyfish as a novelty food, sold dried and salted.

relocating in Yunnan

Verfasst von philipselim (3) am Do, 2005-12-08 01:51.

I am a foreign English Teacher. I would like to relocate in a small city in Yunnan with dry, cool summers and warm winters. I am planning to go there during the spring festival and would need a Chinese guide. I also would appreciate any suggestions and tips of your favorite place to visit.

2 peasant farmers dead, families get big pay-off from government.

Verfasst von wtanaka (648) am Di, 2005-12-06 15:27.

Following that attempt, Yantang sent civilian officials to the village to persuade the peasants to give up their allegations of wrongdoing in the interests of stability. At the same time, the two dead men's families were paid compensation, $21,250 for Deng Silong's family and $22,500 for Deng Jianlan's.

The washington post seems to be covering peasant unrest in China quite a lot recently.

Chinese mangled by westerners

Verfasst von wtanaka (648) am Di, 2005-12-06 10:26.

You've probably already seen engrish.com, dedicated to manglings of the English language on shirts, signs, and products.  There's now a site dedicated to the manglings of chinese characters which happens on tattoos.  Probably most humorous to those that know what the characters were supposed to look like.

I would love some suggestions

Verfasst von ancient (5) am Mo, 2005-12-05 19:31.

Hi,

I will be travelling from Hong Kong to Beijing, but dont really want to simply jump on a train.  I would love to take in some cool places on the way.  Maybe travelling through Jiangxi Anhui, Shandong and Hebei (this just presents as a good path.

Is this a crazy way to go? Should I be looking at a different route?  Am I missing some must see places?

I read on this site that I shouldnt miss these

1. The great wall.
2. Terracota soldiers at Xi'An.
3. The Forbiden city. Beijing.
4. Lijiang old town. Yunnan province.
5. The YangTze river.
