Many people in the western world still have various misconceptions about modern China and the role of communism. They believe that the entire population (all 1.3 billion) is dressed in grey uniforms, and tiny people with bound- feet shuffle as they are forced to march subserviently into the factories, day in and day out. Actually, I think a lot of people will be shocked when they visit Shanghai or Shenzhen.
Even today, I know people still think Hong Kong is still somewhat a third world city.
If you talk to people in middle America, a lot of people have no idea what China is about. they might think China is the same as North Korea (maybe so 40 years ago) or the old Soviet Empire.
In their mind, maybe rice paddles fields and the People's Liberation Army marching in the background. A sort of backward and military background. A hydrid between Vietnam and North Korea?
Anyway, modern China is different and no one knows what will happen in the future. Shenzhen was only a very small village 30 years ago but today is one of the major cities in China. You may not know if you're in Hong Kong or Shenzhen or even Tokyo.
The economic developments is a stunning acheivement even with major set backs in the late 1980s. Double digit growth is assured and changes in the city can be seen every month, if not weeks. Sometimes it is hard to catch up. The price of this economic success is apparent. Pollution, crime and many social issues.
Can you say it is a bad thing? Surely not. As Deng famously said, when you open up, there will be flies come in and we should not be discouraged.
Looking back Deng Xiapeng open door policy did make a hugh impact not only to China but to the world. It put China back on the political map, creating wealth for the world and most of all bring stability to the region. It is difficult to argue that the economic growth in China did bring the whole asia into a whole new dimension in terms of trade and growth.
It is not doubt this is the Asian Century, with the two giants China and India waking up the future is bright.

Since China is officially a communist country, a lot of people also seem to mistake China for being socialist, which isn't the case at all in the modern day. China has one of the largest gaps between rich and poor in the world, which is the opposite of what a socialist country (like those in scandinavia) would be aiming for.
China does still keep some of the other aspects of communism, like the totalitarian and centrally planned government, which certainly has allowed China to make quick policy shifts. But it's pretty far from socialist.
The government does see this as a problem, and seem to be instituting progressive policies this year to move China back a bit closer to socialism. I've read that the bottom tax bracket (below which you don't have to pay income tax) has been moved up from 800 yuan per month to 1600 yuan per month as of the last policymaking meeting.
But to think that China has kept the socialist aspect of communism is pretty far off from the reality today.

Put it in a nutshell, politically it is a communist country but economically it is a capitalist system.
