Verfasst von wtanaka (648) am Mi, 2007-02-14 15:17.

Villagers in southwestern China are scratching their heads after an estimated more than $60,000 was spent to paint an entire barren mountainside green.

Workers who began spraying Laoshou mountain last August told villagers they were doing so on orders of the county government but were not told why, media reports said Wednesday.

I heard not too long ago about some climbers that were in town and going to try to be the first ever to climb Kawa Karpo and survive.  Today I read about a pair of climbers gone missing.  Wonder if it's the same people.

50,000 dogs slaughtered in China in anti-rabies campaign

Verfasst von wtanaka (648) am Di, 2006-08-01 14:31.

Mon Jul 31, 2:42 AM ET

BEIJING (AFP) - A county in southwest China has ordered all 50,546 dogs to be killed in an effort to fight a rabies outbreak that has caused the deaths of three people, state media has said.

Around 90 percent of the dogs in Muding county, Yunnan province, had already been killed since the campaign began on July 25, the Beijing News said.

Owners were ordered to kill their pets or face having teams of local police and other enforcement officers kill them, it said.

Even the 4,292 dogs in the county that had been immunized against rabies were ordered put to death, as authorities said the immunizations were not 100 percent effective, the report said.

China Holds German Reporter in Yunnan for `Illegal Interviews'

Verfasst von wtanaka (648) am Sa, 2006-07-08 08:04.

July 6 (Bloomberg) -- Chinese authorities arrested a reporter from Germany's Die Zeit newspaper and held him for five hours for conducting "illegal interviews" with villagers about a dam project in the southwestern province of Yunnan.

The journalist, Georg Blume, was detained by two police patrols in the village of Xiao Shaba after he interviewed farmers near the Nu river about their impending relocation, Die Zeit reported on its Web site. He was taken to a police station, where authorities asked him to turn over his notes and film material.

Blume refused to hand over the documents and signed a declaration that he wouldn't conduct any more interviews and would leave the region immediately. He was released after he'd destroyed a portion of his documents himself, Die Zeit said. The newspaper said it had spoken with Blume by mobile phone.
