A lot of nonsense gets written about this bar, as a recent poster has pointed out. The Bad Monkey is popular with residents and visitors for all the right reasons -- good music, friendly vibe, and great baguettes.

Everyone who writes about this place either romanticises it or condemns it. It's just a good, small
local bar; there's always a lively crowd, the owners are welcoming and the music is great.

I can say that I've been a customer of The Bad Monkey for nearly 2 years now.During my 1st visit to this establishment I meet one of the now ex owners.It was a very basic place not much to say about it other than a few couches,decent music and a small selection of beer.Since September of 05 a new partner came into the picture and it has greatly improved.Everytime I visit the owners revovate something to make it better.They also now serve great snack and sandwhiches and have a large variety of beers and liquors.The staff is some of the best people I have met in my travels.They are very friendly and can always make you laugh with a good joke or funny story.This is one place I always look forward to visiting when I come to Dali.It is a great place to meet other travellers and some of the locals.I highly recommend visiting this establishment for a beer or some food or just to relax after a day of going around Lake Erhi or the mountain in Dali.

Bad Monkey is the only bar in Dali owned by foreigners and definetly the coolest place in China.
It is managed by two completely [snip] englishmen on the run from thai authorities and makes you forget all the bad experience with these boring karaoke discos in China. The Monkey got it all:cheap beer, great music, a lot of smoke, all kinds of [snip] and easy girls.
There are big comfortable sofas where you like to [snip] and sleep until closing time the next morning but also in daytime it is the best place to get away from the busy streets . You even can just go there smoke and chill out without being pressured to order any drink. A friend of mine helped them behind the bar and got free drinks and more....

If u like your drinks being served to u by a manically depressed anorexic chinese girl with glued on dredz then go to Bad monkey! I was sitting enjoying a drink when the 'said' owner (rich,spoilt Chengdu sorority girl)urinated on me and my girlfriend through the floorboards of unpstairs!? Essex boy sounding owner/partner was never to be seen, but the stories which circulate Dali about him are a good indicator that I DON"T want to have the pleasure of a meeting...
Warm, small selection of local beers, staff with serious depressive issues and lack of any kind of atmoushphere other than that of
