The festival usually runs 4 or so days, with the earlier days being more packed with activities and performances.  The morning of the first day features performances -- dancing and singing.  The horse "racing" starts after noon.  Perhaps, for the jaded traveller, one of the more interesting parts of the festival will be the large number of tents pitched around the horse racing track and their various occupants.
