Already an institution among Kunming’s English-speaking population, Quiz Night at Chapter One is an evening of intense intellectual competition. Teams of up to five vie for the two-week title of “smartest foreigners in Kunming” – and a case of delicious beer.

Held fortnightly on Wednesdays at 9:00 pm, Quiz Night gives Kunming’s English-speaking community the opportunity to show off their knowledge (or lack thereof) of current events, history, geography, science, art, music and of course – China.

Quiz Night is composed of three separate sections with short breaks in between during which team scores are calculated and updated. Most evenings feature neck-and-neck competition between several teams up until the final round.

As a friendly gesture, the winning team traditionally shares its beers with the other, lesser teams. This friendly post-quiz feeling of camaraderie is refreshing after a couple of hours of trading barbs with other teams and occasionally Piers – Quiz Night's tough but fair moderator.
