Hi ancient Cool

Are you planning to enter China from Thailand?

If so, then there is a Chinese consulate in
Chiang Mai as well as the embassy in Bangkok.

Shocked

How long do you plan to be on the road for?

You could consider catching a bus or train from Bangkok to Chiang
Mai. The mountainous north of Thailand is quite something. (Consider PAI)

It is posssible to cut over into northern Laos, and go down the Mekong River to Luang Prabang & Veng Vieng (Laos), later overland to north Vietnam to Hue, and up to Hanoi. Halong Bay to the east, is readily accessible from Hanoi by bus / boat. Up to you if you want to go to Hong Kong. Inland & northwest of Hanoi by train, is Sapa. This is close to the border of Yunnan Province. Once over in China, express buses run to Kunming.

You should be able to arrange a China visa in a number of places along the away through Asia. Allow say a week for processing, if you don't want to pay urgent fees.

The other aternative to consider is a freight boat/barge up the Mekong River in Laos to southern Yunnan Province (Xishuangbanna).

A lot depends on how much time you have and what you want to see & do.

Cool

What type of VISA do you want?

A Single Entry visa or a Muti-Entry VISA?

In Hong Kong, for tourist to get a visa is quite simple, pay and go. However I have heard the cost for VISA varies from country to country.

Im flying into Thailand on Jan and plan to go from there into Laos, then cambodia and then Vietnam. Ideally I would like to go from Vietnam but will be in Thailand for the whole month of Jan so have plenty of time to apply while there....

and thanks for all the tips Smile

Cool

There is only a minimal difference in fee between a single
& double entry tourist visa for China. If you want to extend
your visa, that is quite possible to do once you are in China.

Visa extensions are indeed quite easy. If you get your extension in a smaller town, sometimes it can take as little as a few minutes to get your passport back with your new extended visa in it.
