![]() ![]() Joined: 2005-10-18 Points: 8 | ![]() I'm planning on going to Xian in mid-November, and would like to make a side trip to Huashan. I'm currently debating whether or not I should climb the mountain vs. taking the cable car up. I'm fairly fit, but I'm more nervous about the heights and the overall danger of the climb up i.e. not enough barriers to protect me from falling off the mountain if I slip!!! If anyone has been to Huashan and could provide me with some insight, I would appreciate it. Also, how long did it take you to complete the climb? Thanks again! |

Hi chinchineropee
Welcome to The Treehouse.
I went to Mount Hua Shan in July 2005. I took the cable car up, & walked around the upper mountains for 3 or 4 hours.
It is quite safe for you to walk up the steps provided. Some are a bit steep, but you should be okay, depending on the weather of course. I'd say allow an hour or two to get up to the cable car upper level.
Mid November could be quite cold, so rug up well.

So you didn't climb from the base of Huashan to the top? That's what I was considering doing, but wasn't sure if I felt safe enough to attempt it.
I didn't realize that you had to climb from the base of the mountain to the cable cars as well. I just assumed that the cable cars were at ground level, but this is not the case?
How did you find the walk around the upper mountains? Worthwhile? I'm trying to decide betwen spending more time in Xian to see the sites west of the city, or to see Huashan.

The tour bus left Xi'an at 8am. It took three hours to drive to Hua Shan. Cost was Y310 RMB ($US38.75) per person. Lunch was not included, but the cable car fee was. The mountain tops were pathed ...
We got back to Xi'an at about 7pm. I felt that it was very well worthwhile. This is the most significant of China's five sacred mountains. I was there during summer. There were a lot of domestic tourists. Avoid visiting on weekend days for this reason.

Thanks for the contact info. Is that the group you went with? I guess the cable car up is probably the best option if I don't plan on staying the night, as the climb all the way up the mountain would take too long.
Thanks for your insight!

The Xi'an Shu Yuan Hostel booked the tour for my friend & I. The price was a bit much for many of the bacpackers at the YHA. The bus was mainly filled with domestic tourists.
There's not much in the way of budget accommodation in Xi'an, so if interested, you can also ask about that in your email.
There was some hotel rooms at the upper cable car level of Hua Shan. I think they were Y100 yuan per night. This could be an option if you wanted to see the sunrise.
