I plan to travel Yunnan (Kunming-Dali-Lijiang) with a couple of days, and I want to reserve the train ticket from Kunming to Dali in advance, but I don't know how to do it, do you have any idea? Thanks in advance.

Cool
Contact the Camellia Travel service at the Camellia Hotel on Dongfeng Donglu, Kunming. They can make train bookings.

Actually where do the train goes in Yunnan? Are they clean? Is it necessary to book in advance?

Both sleeper classes are pretty nice (what i have experience with).  It's generally not necessary to book in advance.

There's tracks being built to extend the Kunming-Dali line up to Lijiang (and eventually to Xianggelila?) but I don't know when that's going to be completed.  There is also service from Kunming to the Stone Forest

So how much is the sleeper class train? Can I pay with credit card?

It's somewhere in the area of 100 yuan.  You won't be able to pay with a credit card if you pay the actual price of the ticket, since the railway doesn't accept credit cards.  You might be able to find a travel agent that will buy the ticket for you and charge your credit card, but they'll charge you a premium for that service.

Thanks for the info. Is that a normal practice to charge a premium for credit card? Or only for travel agent? What if I buy a flight ticket from the agent with card, would they still charge me the premium?

Around here, the idea of using a credit card is still not commonplace.  In the U.S., I'm used to being able to buy an $0.80 postage stamp with my credit card.  Here, the places that accept credit cards are still limited, and at some of them (like Walmart and some banks), they only handle domestic (and not international) credit cards.  Thus being able to use your foreign credit card is limited to a few places like Carrefour and higher-end hotels and tourist-facing businesses.  If you walk into a shop that accepts credit cards in most of Asia, it's a good sign that you'll be paying too much money for the goods inside.

I don't actually know what kinds of premiums get charged, never having been to one of (they must exist) upscale places that accept them.  If you buy your train tickets at the station of departure (where they come from anyway), or your plane tickets from a reasonably priced agent, they won't accept credit cards. I guess it depends on how important it is to you to use the credit card.  If price is a big consideration, you probably won't be able to use your credit card for much other than cash advances.

Can anyone confirm if there is still a train running from Kunming to the Stone Forest, I'm reading the very latest edition of LP and it says this service has ceased, forcing travellers to take bus.

Thanks

Esther

the day train from km - dali is cheap.only costs 35RMB.
night train is more expensive.depends on what sleeper u wanna get.
