I realise that this train line has only recently been opened so maybe that is why. Can you tell me any information about travelling to Lhasa by train from Chengdu and how much it would be one way to travel hard sleeper or soft sleeper. Kind regards Rich

We heard it was $100 from Beijing to lhasa. however, getting a ticket without booking a tour with someone seems very difficult. In theory one can go to the station and buy one. The reality is that the people on the counter won't sell you one cos they take a cut from the agents to sell them the tickets. We've gone to buy tickets as they become available to be told only there are none left or only the top bunks are available. The agents however seem to have them. Also, bear in mind that the ticket allocation from Golmud may be tiny. IE to be sure of a ticket you'll have to get on at a bigger centre. The trains in China are great but the ticket system needs some serious attention. However, if you have success please let us know.
there's always the golmud to lhasa bus but this was 24 hours minimum when we did it a couple of years ago. however, some people did manage to avoid the large permit fee by arranging the bus to stop the other side of the checkpost. They then got a taxi to the other side of the checkpost and got on the bus. Very nice for them, but annoying for those of us who paid the permit and then had to wait for an hour for them to turn up! you live and learn eh?
