Rice is covered by husk. The outer layer of rice is called bran. The whole
rice before removing these layers called paddy. Since bran and husk are not
eatable; thus, they must be removed from paddy. When Husk is removed, the rice
kernel is called brown rice. As Bran is tightly attached to the rice it is
difficult to be removed from brown rice. The removal of the bran from brown rice
is called polishing or whitening process. rice polisher is
a very vital step in the process of converting paddy into marketable rice, known
as polished rice. Polishing operation removes the oil-rich (18-20% w/w) outer
coat fraction of rice (called bran) so as to obtain grains with better
digestibility and to create consumer acceptability with its smooth surface
finish.

Paddy in its raw form cannot be consumed by human beings. It needs to be
suitably processed for obtaining rice. Rice milling is the process which helps
in removal of hullsand barns from paddy grains to produce polished rice. Rice
forms the basic primary processed product obtained from paddy and this is
further processed for obtainingvarious secondary and tertiary products.

Brown (husked, unpolished) rice was subjected to single and double pass
whitening/polishing to obtain a polishing percentage of 8% by weight. The
machines were first adjusted to optimum operating conditions and their
performance was evaluated in terms of efficiency, capacity, power consumption,
rice whiteness, percentage broken grains, labour requirement and cost of
polishing. The results showed that the best machinery combination for polishing
of the long grain type non-parboiled rice is the use of an abrasive type
polisher as the primary polisher and a friction type polisher as the secondary
polisher.

Last, processing quality are the main criteria for judging the
performance of rice milling machine, enterprises must continuously
improve the technological content of rice polisher, and guarantee
the processing quality of rice polisher.
