China warns of poisonous Dragon Boat dumplings

wtanaka (648) 于 周三, 2006-05-31 17:02 提交。

BEIJING (Reuters) - China warned consumers on Monday to be wary of eating dumplings served by millions of families during the annual Dragon Boat Festival, saying they may be poisonous.

The glutinous rice dumplings, or "zongzi," are wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves and shaped like pyramids, but some unscrupulous manufacturers are using copper-based chemicals to keep the leaves green, the China Daily said.

"The leaves dyed by copper sulphate or copper chloride contain metal elements which will penetrate into the zongzi and cause great damage to the health," food expert Shen Xiangkun was quoted as saying, backing a warning by the China Consumer Association.

How do you know if a Yuan/RMB note is real or fake?

wtanaka (648) 于 周二, 2006-05-16 13:07 提交。

Things I check:

  • Mao's shoulder should be textured
  • The big 100 in the middle of the bill should be embossed in exactly the same spot on the reverse side of the bill
  • The small 100 near the bottom of the bill should change from gold to green depending on the angle at which you are viewing it

There's also the metal strip running down the middle of the bill (the difference between the real and fake strip in the above picture is pretty clear)

The news reports come to the conclusion that they were discarded by artists that had purchased the skulls and kept the parts they needed.

Let the peasants own their land

wtanaka (648) 于 周五, 2006-04-14 06:56 提交。

The Economist has an short article arguing that China would solve all sorts of problems by allowing peasants to own land.  The argument is a bit hand-wavy (personally, I think that the doomsday scenario mentioned in the article of farmers all selling their land en-masse and moving to cities which would then sprout big shanty towns rings quite true), but the article has a bit of a summary history of land ownership in China, which I found interesting to read.

You get your 15 minutes in China too

Back in October, these videos of two Chinese college students lip-synching to Backstreet boys songs was making its rounds around the internet.  They're (now?) called the "Back Dormitory Boys", and have (along with their Counterstrike-playing roommate who can be seen in the background in the videos) become quite famous.

Guizhou for May holiday week!

ellyse (16) 于 周二, 2006-04-11 12:02 提交。

My friends and I will be heading to Guizhou for the May holiday week. Our tentative plans are to depart Shanghai (plane/train) on 29/4 (Sat) and be back in Shanghai by 7/5 (Sun) night, or at the very latest, early morning 8/5 (Mon).

1) What are your best recommendations for sightseeing in Guizhou?
1a) Ideally, we'd like to visit a Miao village, a Buyi village, a Shui village and a Dong village, without any repetition. I don't mind missing out Buyi and Shui villages due to time constraints, especially if they're not very photogenic... any opinions?
1b) We'd also like to see 1 waterfall, 1 group of caves and enjoy 1 rafting experience. I've thought about going for Huangguoshu Waterfall, Zhijin Caves (instead of Longgong Caves) and the rafting at Maling River Gorge... any opinions? I've heard that the Zhijin Caves are not very well-run... If visiting Huangguoshu Waterfall, I'd ideally leave it till the end of the holiday week when there should be less tourists there.
1c) It seems that northern Guizhou isn't very interesting, so I'm skipping that. Any other recommendations for the rest of Guizhou will be welcome!
